06-22-2017 - Julien Ferstenfeld Obituary

Ferstenfeld, Julian E. M.D. 'Jay' Entered eternity on February 1, 2013, at the age of 71. He was a devoted and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and physician. His passing marks the culmination of a life of untiring service to his family, country and the greater Milwaukee community. Jay is survived by his loving wife Sharon, children Megan (Jesus) Ferstenfeld-Torres and Adam (Annette) Ferstenfeld, grandchildren Quintin, Kylee, and Corbin, and sister Mindy (Robert) Licht. He is further survived by many other loving relatives and numerous friends. Those who knew him well, are quick to recall his dry sense of humor and unwavering kindness to all who were fortunate enough to cross his path in life. His work ethic, generosity, and commitment to helping others will serve as an inspiration for many generations to come. Jay was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa in 1962. He continued on at Iowa to earn his medical degree in 1966. He then relocated to Milwaukee, completing his internship in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. From 1967 to 1969, Jay enlisted and served as a Captain M.C. in the United States Army and honorably fulfilled a 13-month deployment to the demilitarized zone in South Korea. Upon his discharge, he returned to the Medical College, where he completed his residency and fellowship in Infectious Diseases. Jay began his distinguished medical career as an instructor and assistant professor of internal medicine at the Medical College before transitioning into private practice in 1978. He retained a teaching role as an Assistant and Associate Clinical Professor of Family Medicine (based at Waukesha Memorial Hospital) until June 2007, and was admired and beloved by many residents for his patience and exemplary bedside manner. In 1998, he was awarded the Marvin Wagner, M.D. Clinical Preceptor Award for excellence in medical education and was the recipient of the Faculty of the Year Award for the Waukesha Family Medicine Residency Program in both 1998 and 2007. He also served as President of the Infectious Disease Society of Milwaukee from 1980 to 1981. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Friday, February 8, from 4 to 7PM. A memorial service will be celebrated at the funeral home on Saturday, February 9, at 11AM. Memorials to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family. The family wishes to convey their heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff at the Aurora VNA Zilber Family Hospice for their exceptional care.
